On Being a Dentist

It is a real joy and privilege to be part of a profession that can help people to live better lives.

Each person comes to me with specific expectations and concerns. It’s my responsibility to learn what the individual wants, to understand their clinical needs, and to determine the best way to deliver the results the person deserves: functional, stable, and beautiful, and make the process worry-free.

Professionally and personally, I enjoy the diversity of my days, the challenges I encounter, and the wonderful people I spend time with. Turing a situation from one of fear and apprehension to one of calm and relief is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do every day.

It is fulfilling to be able to make a difference in a person’s life, whether it be the immediate relief of pain, education on how to improve oral health, or delivering long-term benefits of a smile makeover.

As a dentist, I use my skills to make a positive change in people’s lives, striving to exceed their expectations in a caring and compassionate manner. I look forward to the opportunity to do the same with you.

Education and Experience

I grew up in Arthur, Illinois, and attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where I received my Bachelor of Science in 1987. Dental school came next, at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine, where I obtained my Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD) in 1991.

Following dental school, I practiced general dentistry in Greenwood, Indiana, before establishing my practice in Tuscola in 1997. It has been a great honor to serve this amazing community, making lifelong friends and building connections with neighbors.

I am proud of my practice and how we approach dentistry. Our patients know they will receive individual attention and be cared for as a friend rather than a number.

Professional Affiliations, Continuing Education, and Activities

I am an active member of the:

  • American Dental Association
  • Illinois State Dental Society
  • Eastern Illinois Dental Society
  • Garg Implant Continuum Association
  • Past Board Member, Douglas County Health Department

I have remained a dedicated student throughout my career, constantly taking courses and completing trainings on the latest research, new technologies, and changes in methodologies. I have also sought-out specialized training that expands my skills and the services I am able to provide patients.

I have kept current with the digital revolution and use of innovative radiography. I have also studied white filling techniques, implant placement and restoration, and clear braces / aligner therapy.

Continuing education, for myself and my team, ensures we are providing the best possible outcomes: delivered gently and efficiently, for the best experience and results.

I enjoy sharing my constantly updated dental knowledge with our patients, teaching each about better ways to maintain their oral health. Additionally, I offer outreach in the community, teaching about the importance of preventive dental care and maintenance.

Beyond the Practice

My beautiful wife Andrea and I married in 1991. We raised our two children – Rachel and Michael – here in Tuscola. Our family now includes two grandchildren, Gabriel and Ezra, and two munchkin cats, Stanley and Willow.

I spend time with family any chance I get. Beyond those hours, I enjoy watching the change of seasons and the activities associated with them: gardening, golfing, or fishing in the spring and summer; hunting in the fall; reading and laying low in the winter.
